PETER MULLAN - Riley

Peter Mullan was born in Peterhead, Scotland and began his career directing shorts at the age of 19. Soon after, he decided to dedicate himself to acting, making his debut in the theatre in 1988 before pursuing a career in television and cinema. Since making his film debut as Peter in Ken Loach’s Riff Raff in 1990, Mullan has acted in over thirty films, including Braveheart, alongside Mel Gibson, the cult-classic Trainspotting and Young Adam, both with Ewan MacGregor, The Claim, with Milla Jovovich, and My Name is Joe, for which he won Best Leading Actor at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. Other film credits include the upcoming Children of Men, directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Blinded, Kiss of Life, and Ordinary Decent Criminal, opposite Kevin Spacey.

Nominated by the Royal Television society for his directorial work on Cardiac Arrest, Mullan made his feature-film directing debut with 1997’s Orphans, which won awards at the Angers European First Film Festival, Gijón International Film Festival, Paris International Film Festival, and Venice Film Festival. He followed this up with 2002’s critically-acclaimed The Magdalene Sisters, which he won several awards, including Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion, Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery Award, Newport International Film Festival’s Jury Award, London Critics Circle Awards for Best Director and Film, the European Union’s MEDIA Prize, Los Angeles/IFP West Film Festival’s Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature, and the Nantucket Film Festival’s Audience Award for Best Feature. Mullen will next be seen alongside Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley as Odoacer in The Last Legion.

 

MARTIN COMPSTON - Sean

Ken Loach discovered Martin Compston in 2001, when he cast him in the lead role in his film Sweet Sixteen, for which he was nominated Best Actor at Cannes in 2002, and won Most Promising Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards, and Most Promising New Talent – BAFTA (Scotland) 2002, amongst many other critical award nominations. Martin has since played three seasons in BBC TVs Monarch of the Glen, (2003-2006), which is screened on terrestrial, satellite and cable in Europe, Australasia and the USA.

Martin’s profile as a leading man in independent cinema continued with Niceland – “a fine performance from Martin Compston” (Variety), and in the horror film Wild Country. He returned to Ken Loach’s direction in Tickets, 2005, then followed up with a major role opposite Robert Downey Jr. and Dianne Wiest in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (dir: Dito Monteil). In 2006, he joined the cast of Red Road, for which Oscar-winning director Andrea Arnold won the Jury Prize at Cannes.

 

GARY LEWIS - The Skipper

Gary Lewis was born in Glasgow, and since his film debut in 1994's Shallow Grave, alongside Ewan MacGregor, he has appeared in over 40 films, including the award-winning My Name is Joe, Orphans, for which he won the Best Actor Award at the Gijón Film Festival, Carla's Song, What Where, One Life Stand, Goal!, and Billy Elliot, for which he received the Best Actor Award at the 2001 Flaiano Film Festival. Other feature credits include The Rocket Post, The Escapist, Shiner, with Michael Caine, the Golden Globe-, BAFTA- and Oscar-nominated Joyeux Noël, and opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Liam Neeson and Brendan Gleeson in Martin Scorsese's award-winning Gangs of New York.

In addition to his numerous television credits, including Rehab and Gunpowder, Treason & Plot, Lewis' stage credits include Love Lies Bleeding, Wasted, Grapes of Wrath, The Funeral, Ecstasy, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. He will next be seen opposite Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich as Hrothgar in Stefen Fangmier's Eragon.

 

STEVEN ROBERTSON - The Cook

Steven Robertson was raised in the Shetland Islands and trained as an actor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he received an Honours BA in Acting. Stage credits include Anthony & Cleopatra, Ward Six, King Lear, and Chekov’s The Seagull, for which he earned an Ian Charleson Award Nomination for Best Actor.

Steven’s Film credits include Inside I’m Dancing, which won awards at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, British Independent Film Awards, IFTA Awards, and London Critics Circle Film Awards, Ridley Scott’s The Kingdom of Heaven, and Joyeux Noël, which was nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Film Award, a Golden Globe, and seven César Awards. He will next be seen in Dan Reed’s Straightheads, with Gillian Anderson, and the upcoming Golden Age, directed by Shekhar Kapur.

 

ANGEL LI - Su Li

Angel Li is 12 years old. She was born in the city of Shenyang in north-east China, where she lived and went to school until 2002. In that year, she emigrated to Ireland, and now lives in Dublin. Her interests include drama, dance, karate and playing the piano. True North is her first feature film.
